Second hand eCommerce is growing in global popularity. This is due to certain cycles of fashion and popularity of trends from the 90s or previous eras. It is also due to consumers becoming more aligned with their ethical values when making purchases. Shoppers will consider environmental factors when purchasing more so now than ever before.

Fast Fashion

So now we know the reasons why second hand eCommerce is growing in popularity, the next question is: what is it? Well, following from the reasons, second hand eCommerce is the practice of selling products and items that have already been previously owned.

Rather than adding to the huge numbers of products that are constantly manufactured, many of them with short life span expectancy, second hand eCommerce turns to items that are already around. ‘Fast Fashion’ is known to have detrimental effects on the environment. With businesses producing large quantities of items that are currently trending, with little thought to their durability.

These items are produced in mass quantities, oftentimes using unethical labor methods, and then sold for extremely cheap. This means that shoppers have the ability to continuously buy new products without worrying about cost, but ultimately creating waste.

When the topics are so trend specific, they burst in and out of fashion like a strike of lightning. This means that often these clothes will end up in landfills in global majority countries. This is bad for the environment, as well as the producers of the clothes. The cycle then continues when the next item becomes fashionable.

This process, known as fast fashion, has started to attract criticism as a result of the reasons I’ve just pointed out. One response to this is slow fashion.

Slow Fashion

Slow Fashion, as opposed to Fast Fashion, changes the focus. Rather than needing to immediately create large quantities of currently trending products, fast fashion looks to go slower. It looks to create timeless pieces that withstand.

The emphasis isn’t on currently trending fashion, but on items that can be worn again and again, ideally throughout life. These will be made of sustainable materials, in ethical working conditions. As a result of this, the items will be more expensive, but they will come with benefits.

These are:

  • Good quality with long durability
  • Ethical conditions for the makers
  • Lower carbon footprint for creation
  • Less landfill waste
  • Less harm for the planet

Slow fashion is a great option for those who have the budget to invest in lifetime pieces. Slow fashion brands are becoming more popular, and there is a good reason why. However, this may not suit all buyers who would otherwise be interested in fast fashion. That’s where second hand eCommerce comes in.

Second Hand Ecommerce

Second hand eCommerce bridges the gap between fast and slow fashion. Shoppers may not have the budget to invest in slow fashion pieces. They also may enjoy sampling different styles, rather than committing to a few staple pieces. This is where second hand eCommerce comes in.

Through buying items that have been previously owned, a lot of the benefits are staying in places. There are less items going to landfill; firstly because the second hand item is saved, and secondly because less fast fashion items have been purchased.

There is less stress being put on creating so many new items relating to new trends, which increases the working conditions of laborers. There is not the environmental cost of items being created and then shipped worldwide. Lastly, the items can be sold for cheaper prices as they have been previously owned.

Although we have been focusing on fashion in this article, this can also extend to electronics, furniture and commonly vehicles.

Some sites have been set up entirely to facilitate second hand eCommerce. For example, Vinted and eBay. Some brands offer trade-in or buy-back programs, so older pieces don’t go to waste. Some brands have sections in their store selling previously owned items.

Conclusion

Giving these items a ‘second-life’ is a win-win for everyone involved. It’s easy to see why so many people are preferring to purchase second hand items. In shops where there is a curation, it can be just as rewarding and exciting to purchase second hand. Especially when this may be from top brands, where the price is now significantly reduced. So, what are you waiting for? Why don’t you explore second hand eCommerce today?
